The image of George Washington, the Eye of Providence and other emblematic features of the dollar underscore a critical commentary on how economics and conflict are inextricably linked in contemporary society.
Biography
Born in 1986 in Catania, Sicily, Francesco La Rosa is an Italian contemporary artist renowned for his hyper-realistic artworks created through a unique micro-carving technique on leather. His fascination with art and multipurpose knives began in childhood, leading him to enrol at the Art Institute in Catania during his teenage years.
La Rosa’s innovative approach involves using scalpels and knives to carve intricate designs into leather, a method he discove red serendipitously during a commission for a client. This realisation sparked an in-depth study to refine his technique, characterised by meticulous attention to detail and precision. His process begins with extensive studies and sketches on paper, followed by digital refinement, before the final engraving on leather, a medium he describes as timeless and rich in cultural significance.
One of his most ambitious projects includes a full-scale replica of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” measuring 8.6 meters by 4.6 meters, composed of eighteen separate panels joined together. La Rosa views his work as a means to restore immortality to leather, a material that was once alive, and aims to use his art as a therapeutic tool, particularly in teaching disabled children.
His dedication to his craft and unique artistic vision have garnered international recognition, with exhibitions and collaborations that showcase the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art
