Theresa Rézeau Fine Art
A collection should reflect more than what you can acquire. It should reflect what you value.
The decision to acquire an artwork begins long before the purchase. It begins with understanding the work, its history, its importance and the place it might hold within a collection.
Theresa Rézeau Fine Art provides independent, research-led advisory for private collectors seeking guidance on acquisitions and collection development.
Founded by Theresa Rézeau, an independent curator and Editor-in-Chief of The Image & Culture Journal, the practice brings together art-historical research, cultural interpretation and curatorial judgement.
With a particular specialism in sacred art and interfaith visual culture, alongside interests in historical painting, sculpture, modern and contemporary art, the focus remains on the qualities of the artwork and its relevance to the collector.
The Art of Collecting
Beyond the Artist’s Name
A celebrated name may attract attention, but it does not establish whether a particular artwork belongs in a collection.
A seventeenth-century painting may have a well-documented provenance, an established attribution and an attractive price, yet remain poorly suited to a collector’s existing holdings.
Equally, a work by a lesser-known artist may possess exceptional qualities that contribute more meaningfully to a collection.
The purpose of advisory is not simply to establish whether an artwork can be acquired, but whether it should be.
Advisory Services
Private Art Acquisitions
Guidance on acquisitions through galleries, auctions and private-sale opportunities, spanning historical painting, sacred art, sculpture, modern and contemporary works.
From established artists such as Pablo Picasso and Jean-Michel Basquiat to lesser-known artists deserving closer attention, the emphasis remains on artistic quality, provenance, historical context and suitability for the collector.
Research and recommendations are developed around the collector’s interests, budget and long-term objectives.
Collection Development & Curation
For collectors wishing to establish, expand or refine a collection.
Advisory includes defining collecting priorities, researching artists and artistic movements, identifying potential acquisitions and exploring how works complement or challenge one another within a collection.
The aim is to develop a collection with coherence, depth and a clear sense of direction.
Art for Private Residences
A painting should not be selected simply because its colours complement a room.
Theresa Rézeau Fine Art advises on works of artistic merit, while taking account of the architecture, scale and character of a private residence.
Where appropriate, collaboration with interior designers helps ensure that placement serves the artwork rather than reducing it to decoration.
Provenance & Specialist Research
For collectors requiring a closer examination of an artwork before acquisition, additional research may be commissioned into its ownership history, attribution, exhibition record, condition documentation and relevant literature.
Where appropriate, independent authentication, conservation, valuation or legal specialists may be engaged by agreement.
How an Engagement Begins
Initial Consultation — Approximately 30 Minutes
A confidential discussion of collecting interests, acquisition objectives, indicative budget and timeframe.
Research & Recommendations
Following agreement on the brief, relevant artworks and acquisition opportunities are researched.
Depending on the commission, findings may be presented through a curated shortlist or written assessment, with supporting documentation where available.
Acquisition Support
Where a collector wishes to proceed, support may include communication with sellers, review of available documentation and coordination with appropriate specialists.
The collector retains control over every acquisition decision.
Professional fees, research timescales and deliverables are agreed before work begins. Any applicable transaction-based fees or third-party remuneration are disclosed and agreed in advance.
The Curatorial Perspective
Research. Interpretation. Discernment.
Theresa Rézeau’s editorial work through The Image & Culture Journal examines individual masterpieces within their artistic, historical and cultural contexts.
Her particular engagement with sacred art and interfaith visual culture informs an approach attentive to symbolism, religious traditions and the meanings artworks hold across cultures.
This perspective extends to questions of power, identity, artistic achievement and cultural memory, bringing depth to the interpretation of works across different periods and traditions.
Selected essays offer an introduction to this research and its relevance to the advisory practice.
