Mark Evans is a remarkably talented London-based artist who has pioneered an extraordinary sculptural technique using leather as his canvas. With surgical precision and an artist’s eye, Evans etches into leather with blades, creating large-scale, hyper-detailed portraits and compositions that are as striking as they are original.

Born in the Welsh countryside, Evans’ artistic journey began in early childhood. At just seven years old, his grandfather gave him his first knife, an innocent gift that would shape his future. He began carving images into the bark of trees around the family farm, unknowingly laying the groundwork for a career that would later revolutionise a traditional material.

After formally studying fine art in London and working with classic mediums like charcoal, oils, and acrylics, Evans returned to carving through a serendipitous accident. “It was just before the millennium,” he recalls. “The YBAs were redefining the British art scene, and there was a digital revolution in the air. My professor told me, ‘painting is dead,’ but I couldn’t shake this primal, childhood urge to create with knives.” That urge found new form when Evans tried to clean a bloodstain from a new leather jacket. As he scratched at the surface, he accidentally exposed the suede underneath, revealing a stark contrast in texture and tone. “That tiny etched patch became my Archimedes ‘eureka’ moment,” Evans says. “It was like an explosion went off in my mind. I saw a world of possibilities.”

Driven by inspiration, he continued etching into the jacket, eventually carving a portrait of Jimi Hendrix onto the back. The response was immediate, strangers stopped him in the street, including a buyer from Harrods, asking where he had purchased the piece. This spontaneous creation marked the birth of a new artisticdirection. Over the years, Evans’ distinctive leather works have captured the attention of celebrities, collectors, and critics alike. High-profile clients, including professional athletes and global icons have commissioned bespoke pieces, while luminaries such as Tracey Emin have praised his work.

Every piece by Mark Evans is a testament to dedication, precision and passion. His art is more than an aesthetic achievement, it is a labour of love, carved into the very fabric of his life story .
