Pain Needs Shelter

By Theresa Rézeau There are moments when the internet mistakes proximity for care. A private fracture becomes public content, grief is circulated, and what might once have been held between a few people enters the glare of commentary, opinion, screenshots, memes and moral verdicts. We call this transparency. We call it truth-telling. Sometimes it is. At other times, suffering has simply acquired an audience. Family wounds need witnesses who are safe, not millions who are entertained. This is not an argument against speaking about pain. Silence can protect abusers, preserve coercion and leave vulnerable people isolated inside harmful situations. There are circumstances in which testimony must travel beyond the family, to friends, therapists, safeguarding professionals, courts, journalists or the wider public. Privacy should never become an ethical disguise for impunity. The more difficult question is not whether pain should be spoken, but what happens after it is spoken. Who receives it? What do they do with it? Does disclosure create safety, accountability and the possibility of repair, or does another person’s suffering become material for spectators who have no responsibility for what happens next? More than a century before social media made those questions urgent in a new way, the German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) created an image that offers an extraordinary lesson in how suffering can be witnessed without being surrendered. In 1903, Kollwitz made Woman with Dead Child. The etching shows a naked woman sitting cross-legged, folded around the lifeless body of a boy. Her head bends towards him. Her arms and legs draw him inward until the two bodies seem almost fused. There is little surrounding space to distract us and almost nothing that explains what has happened. The grief occupies nearly everything. Kollwitz used herself and her seven-year-old son Peter as models. She later recalled drawing herself before a mirror while holding him in her arms. Eleven years later, Peter would be killed in the First World War. That later tragedy should not be read backwards as though the print somehow predicted his death. In 1903, Peter was the living child helping his mother construct an image of bereavement. Knowledge of what followed gives the work an additional historical resonance, but the image must first be allowed to belong to the moment in which it was made. Look at what the woman’s body does. She does not present the child to us. She encloses him. Her body becomes almost architectural, forming a boundary around what has been lost. The child’s face is visible, but the mother’s bends into him. Her grief is unmistakable without becoming explanatory. We are permitted to encounter suffering while being denied the satisfaction of a complete story. That distinction feels increasingly important. Much of contemporary public culture assumes that visibility is inherently virtuous. To speak is brave. To disclose is authentic. To make something visible is to begin correcting it. There is truth in all three ideas, particularly where secrecy has protected wrongdoing. But visibility and care are not synonyms. A person can be seen by millions and held by no one. Kollwitz’s print makes a different demand upon its viewer. It allows us near an unbearable scene without granting us ownership over it. We are not told who the woman is, how the child died or what will happen after she releases his body. There is no villain for us to condemn and no argument into which the grief can be recruited. The image asks us to remain without possessing. That may be one of the defining qualities of a safe witness. A witness is not merely someone who has access to another person’s pain. A safe witness can receive complexity without immediately converting it into judgement. Such a person understands that hearing one moment of a family’s history does not necessarily confer knowledge of the whole, and that presence does not create entitlement. Digital crowds operate under very different pressures. Platforms reward speed, reaction and certainty. A complicated family rupture arrives on a screen and within minutes strangers are assigning motives, diagnosing personalities, identifying villains and announcing what people they have never met should do next. The wound becomes legible by becoming simpler. Family relationships are rarely simple. Love can coexist with anger. Loyalty can survive injury. A person can need distance without wanting permanent estrangement. Someone can forgive without forgetting, or maintain a relationship while changing its boundaries. An account given in the immediate aftermath of conflict may also change as shock recedes and understanding develops. None of this excuses abuse. It recognises that human relationships are often more complicated than the categories through which public audiences consume them. Once intimate conflict becomes mass spectacle, another difficulty appears: the wound acquires a permanent audience. A statement made in anger can be screenshotted. A video can be copied. A confession can be indexed by search engines. Strangers who witnessed the rupture may remain emotionally invested in the version of events they first encountered, even after the people actually involved have changed. Reconciliation then has to contend with spectatorship. People who once demanded that someone leave may resent a reconciliation. Those who adopted one person’s grievance may continue carrying it after that person has put it down. Public storytelling can create communities around pain, but communities built around a wound may have difficulty accepting that the wound no longer wishes to remain their organising principle. Kollwitz gives us the opposite structure. The woman’s arms do not push the child towards an audience. They pull him away from it. The gesture is protective without being evasive. Nothing about the image denies death. Kollwitz makes us confront it directly. The child’s body has weight. The mother’s posture communicates a grief beyond decorum. The work does not sanitise suffering in order to preserve privacy. Instead, it distinguishes revelation from exposure. That distinction matters when considering why people speak publicly about family pain in the first place. Sometimes the reason is safety. Sometimes it is accountability. Sometimes someone has been silenced for years and needs a public language for what happened. Testimony can break structures that depend upon secrecy. The ethical question begins when disclosure ceases to serve the person who is suffering and starts serving the appetite of the audience. Spectacle requires continuation. A story that resolves quietly is less useful than one that keeps producing revelations. Audiences begin expecting updates. New grievances become episodes. Family members who never consented to participation can become characters in a narrative constructed around them. Pain develops an economy. Attention, sympathy, outrage and even money can gather around disclosure. None of this means that the original suffering is false. Genuine pain can still become commodified. Indeed, its authenticity may be precisely what makes it valuable within systems built to reward emotional intensity. Kollwitz’s image refuses that economy. The mother gives us no performance beyond the physical fact of holding. Her face is not arranged for our understanding. Her body does not invite interpretation so much as establish a perimeter. The print also complicates the idea that privacy means silence. Kollwitz made an artwork. She published the image. She transformed intimate bodily gestures into something strangers could encounter. This is not private grief hidden from view. It is mediated grief. That difference is crucial. Art creates distance between experience and disclosure. The artist chooses form, composition, material and what remains absent. Experience is not simply emptied into public space; it is shaped before being offered to another person. Woman with Dead Child went through multiple states as Kollwitz worked and reworked the plate. She experimented with line, drypoint, soft ground, texture and different treatments of the surface. The final image’s emotional force therefore does not come from unfiltered spontaneity. It comes through artistic construction and restraint. There is something important in that process for our own culture. Not every true thing has to be said at the moment it is felt. Time can be part of truth-telling. So can reflection. A person may need to speak immediately for protection, but not every conflict carries that urgency. Some experiences become clearer after anger has cooled. Some words become unnecessary. Others become more precise. Occasionally what first appeared to require an audience turns out to require one trustworthy person. Restraint, understood this way, is not repression. It is the recognition that disclosure has consequences. The same principle applies to those receiving another person’s story. Ethical witnessing asks something of the witness too. It requires resisting the pleasure of judgement, the temptation to repeat what was entrusted to us and the belief that another person’s disclosure has somehow made their life public property. This is why the woman’s enclosure in Kollwitz’s print remains so compelling. Her body seems to say that seeing suffering does not abolish its boundaries. The viewer stands outside those arms. We can recognise grief from there. We can understand something of its magnitude. We can acknowledge the dead child and the woman who refuses, for this moment, to release him. But Kollwitz does not allow us to enter completely. The bodies remain locked together in a relationship that existed before our arrival and exceeds our understanding. More than a century later, our technologies have made witnessing almost effortless. A private argument can reach millions before the people involved have understood what happened between them. The capacity to reveal has grown enormously. Our capacity to receive revelation responsibly has not necessarily grown with it. The answer cannot be universal silence. Nor can it be universal disclosure. There will always be wounds that must be exposed because secrecy itself is dangerous. There will also be wounds whose first requirement is not an audience but somewhere safe enough for the people involved to understand what has happened. The ethical task is learning the difference. Kollwitz gives us the woman and the dead child, but she does not surrender them to us. The body curves around the child. The face bends away. Even in an image made for others to see, something remains protected. We are allowed to witness the grief. We are not given possession of it.
