Hope Is Motion

By Theresa Rézeau Easter is often spoken of as a moment of certainty. The Resurrection answers what seemed impossible. Death is followed by life, despair by hope, absence by return. Yet before that answer is recognised, there is another moment, quieter and closer to ordinary human experience: the moment when something has changed, but no one yet understands what it means. Eugène Burnand chose that moment. In The Disciples Peter and John Running to the Sepulchre on the Morning of the Resurrection (1898), the Swiss painter Eugène Burnand (1850–1921) does not show the risen Christ. He does not show the empty tomb. He gives us no angel, revelation or miraculous apparition. Instead, Peter and John move urgently across a landscape at dawn, travelling towards something they have not yet seen. The light is pale, suspended between night and day. Behind them, the landscape stretches into muted stillness, offering little indication that the world has changed. If a miracle has occurred, Burnand does not show it. He paints the distance that must be crossed before its meaning becomes known. The Gospel of John describes Mary Magdalene coming to the tomb while it was still dark and discovering the stone removed. She runs to Simon Peter and the disciple whom Jesus loved, telling them that Jesus has been taken from the tomb and that she does not know where his body has been placed. The two disciples then set out for the tomb. They are responding, therefore, not to certainty but to disturbance. Something expected to remain where it was has disappeared. The body is gone. Mary does not arrive announcing the Resurrection. She brings troubling news about an absence whose meaning she cannot explain. And so they run. Burnand places the two disciples close together, but their faces and gestures are markedly different. John, traditionally understood as the younger of the two, looks intensely towards what lies ahead. His hands are drawn together near his chest, and his body leans into the direction of travel. Peter appears heavier. His brow is furrowed, his hands held close as he moves beside John. The painting cannot tell us exactly what either man is thinking, and its power does not depend upon pretending that it can. But Peter arrives at this morning carrying a history the viewer already knows. Only days earlier, he had insisted that he would remain faithful to Jesus even if others did not. Before the night was over, he had denied knowing him three times. That history changes the meaning of the figure Burnand gives us. Peter is not simply running towards an unexplained empty tomb. He is moving towards the possibility of encountering again the person he denied at the moment when loyalty mattered most. If Jesus is dead, Peter must live with the fact that his final hours with him were marked by failure. If Jesus is alive, Peter may have to face him. Either possibility gives weight to the urgency Burnand paints into his body. Peter does not wait until he has resolved his guilt, understood Mary’s report or decided what he believes. His brow remains troubled, his hands remain tense, but his body moves forward. This is where Burnand gives hope physical form. It does not appear as serenity on Peter’s face or certainty in John’s. It appears in the direction of their bodies. Both men lean towards a destination that remains outside the frame. Their garments are caught by their movement, their faces fixed ahead, their hands carrying different kinds of tension. Burnand does not need to paint certainty because he paints response. Hope, in this sense, is not a conclusion. It is a direction. That distinction matters because hope would require very little courage if it appeared only after evidence had arrived. Once the answer is known, hope has already become something else. Burnand keeps the evidence beyond the edge of the canvas. Peter and John cannot see the tomb, and neither can we. The empty space ahead of them therefore becomes part of the argument. The destination exists, but Burnand withholds it. We see only two men crossing the distance towards it. This reverses the order in which we often imagine belief and action. We tend to assume that certainty should precede movement: first we know, then we act. Burnand gives us bodies already in motion while understanding remains incomplete. Their movement does not prove that what they hope for is true. It reveals only that the possibility is sufficient to draw them forward. Yet movement itself should not be romanticised. Not every action is hopeful simply because it is action. Sometimes wisdom requires waiting, and sometimes stopping prevents greater harm. A person living through grief, exhaustion or fear does not fail because movement is temporarily impossible. Hope should not become another demand placed upon those already carrying more than they can bear. Burnand’s painting avoids that simplification because Peter and John are not running arbitrarily. Something has interrupted what they believed to be final. Their movement is a response to news, however incomplete, that the reality they thought settled may no longer be settled. Peter’s face keeps that movement from becoming uncomplicated optimism. Burnand does not give him the expression of a man already celebrating. His features remain drawn and searching. The past has not disappeared simply because a new possibility has opened before him. His failure travels with him, complicating the assumption that we must first become worthy of whatever future we are moving towards. Peter has no opportunity to repair himself before setting out. He cannot undo the courtyard, the questions or his denials. Burnand catches him before the later restoration described in the Gospel of John, before the conversation in which Christ will ask him three times whether he loves him. The figure in this painting exists between failure and whatever may come after it. The road does not erase what Peter has done. It gives him somewhere other than his failure to go. John’s presence beside him prevents the painting from becoming solely a portrait of remorse. The two men share the same direction without sharing the same visible expression. John’s gaze is more open and intent; Peter’s face appears burdened. Their hands differ, their features differ, their histories differ, yet Burnand places their bodies almost shoulder to shoulder within the same urgent movement. Hope does not require uniformity. One person may move with expectation while another moves with doubt; one may possess a confidence another cannot yet reach. Burnand does not resolve those differences. He lets two distinct human responses occupy the same road. This is one reason the unseen destination matters so much. Had Burnand included the tomb, our attention would naturally have moved towards it. Had he shown the risen Christ, the uncertainty written across the disciples’ faces would have been overwhelmed by revelation. Instead, the most important thing in the story exists beyond the painting. Christian art had centuries of Resurrection imagery available to Burnand: the empty tomb, angels, astonishment, the risen Christ. He chose the approach. The decision holds the viewer within the same temporal condition as the disciples. We may know what the Christian story says comes next, but nothing in the visible landscape confirms it for the men who are running. Even the dawn participates in this uncertainty. Light has arrived, but it has not yet transformed the landscape. The sky is luminous without being triumphant. Night is receding, yet the earth remains subdued. Burnand could have made sunrise an obvious metaphor for Resurrection, flooding the scene with radiance. Instead, the light remains restrained. Morning is beginning before understanding does. In this respect, Burnand’s Easter morning follows naturally from the difficulty of Good Friday. On Friday, the future cannot yet be seen. On Sunday morning, something has changed, but its meaning has not yet been grasped. Between despair and revelation lies the distance Burnand makes Peter and John cross. Much of human life is lived in such intervals. We frequently understand events only after passing through them. A beginning does not announce what it will become. A loss does not immediately reveal how it will alter us. Decisions sometimes have to be made before their consequences are known. Burnand keeps those abstractions grounded in two bodies. Peter and John are not standing in contemplation of uncertainty. Their coats pull behind them. Their shoulders incline forward. Their eyes search beyond the frame. Whatever uncertainty means intellectually, here it has weight, direction and speed. Hope cannot eliminate that uncertainty, nor should it. If hope guaranteed the outcome, it would cease to be hope and become knowledge. What Burnand paints is the moment before that transformation, when reality and recognition have not yet met. Within the Christian narrative, the Resurrection has already occurred. Peter and John simply do not know it yet. That distinction gives the painting an unusual temporal tension. The answer exists beyond their knowledge and beyond the frame. Their uncertainty does not determine what is true, but the truth waiting ahead does not make their uncertainty less real. Burnand respects both. This is also why Peter’s presence matters beyond the discovery of the empty tomb. What awaits him is not merely evidence that Jesus has risen. His story will eventually require encounter and restoration. Resurrection does not make his denial disappear. It makes return possible. Hope therefore does not merely promise Peter something pleasant. It calls him back towards a relationship he had every reason to approach with shame. Burnand does not paint that restoration. He leaves Peter before it, moving towards a future in which forgiveness is not yet visible. The furrowed brow with which he began the journey remains with us. So do John’s searching eyes, the hands held close to their bodies and the landscape opening ahead. The painting returns us to what it has shown from the beginning: two men, a pale morning and a destination we cannot see. There is no empty tomb within the frame. There is no risen Christ. There is only the road towards what may change everything. Burnand could have painted certainty, but he chose approach. He could have painted revelation, but he chose two bodies already responding to its possibility. Peter and John have not yet reached the tomb or possessed the answer carrying them across the landscape. They are moving towards it. Hope is motion.
