Even the Jailbird Sings

By Theresa Rézeau A prison is built to do more than confine the body. It seeks to regulate time, movement, routine, and hope itself. The walls announce that freedom has ended. The locked doors insist that tomorrow will resemble yesterday. Every corridor reminds those inside that someone else now decides where they may go, when they may eat, and even when they may sleep. Yet prisons have always failed at one thing. They have never fully silenced the human spirit. Somewhere behind bars, someone still hums a melody remembered from childhood. Someone writes a letter. Someone kneels to pray. Someone laughs. Someone dreams of the sea. Someone forgives. Even the jailbird sings. The Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) gave this paradox extraordinary visual form in Prisoners' Round, painted in 1890 during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy. A group of prisoners moves through an exercise yard in a circular procession. What matters is not simply their confinement, but the rhythm Van Gogh gives it: body following body, step following step, movement without destination. Then one man looks outward. His gaze is easy to miss. He does not break from the procession. He does not raise his arms or challenge the guards. His body remains inside the circle, moving with everyone else. Only his face interrupts the rhythm. That small interruption changes the painting. Suddenly these are no longer anonymous convicts marching around a yard. They are human beings. They have names, memories, mothers, regrets, and futures we cannot see. Whatever brought them there, Van Gogh does not tell us. The painting gives us no case files and no verdicts. It gives us bodies moving beneath walls and one face that refuses, however quietly, to disappear into the crowd. History is full of prisons. The Romans imprisoned conquered kings, medieval castles held political rivals, colonial governments filled cells with those who demanded liberty, and dictatorships have repeatedly discovered that prison walls are easier to build than arguments. Yet empires disappear. Prisons become museums. The voices remain. The apostle Paul wrote letters from prison that continue to shape millions of lives two thousand years later. Nelson Mandela entered prison as a political prisoner and emerged twenty-seven years later to become South Africa's first democratically elected president. Across continents and centuries, prisoners have written, prayed, composed, remembered and imagined lives beyond the places in which they were confined. Freedom may never have been quite where we assumed it was. There is something peculiar about the persistence of song in places where there is very little to celebrate. Human beings have sung while working under coercion, in exile, during war and behind prison walls. When almost everything else can be taken from a person, the voice remains one of the last possessions of the self. A song requires no key, passport, property or permission. It can be carried entirely within the body. A prisoner may lose his clothes, privacy, possessions, name and control over his movements. He may be given a number. His day may be divided according to bells, doors and instructions. Yet somewhere within him remains a private territory containing memories, prayers, rhythms and melodies. The authorities may control the cell. They cannot always control what happens inside the mind. Look again at Van Gogh's prisoners. Their bodies are forced into a collective rhythm, but their faces are not identical. The institution determines the direction in which they walk; it cannot quite erase the fact that each man experiences the walk alone. None of this makes suffering noble. There is nothing romantic about incarceration. Prisons contain violence, loneliness, remorse, fear and despair. Some people inside them have caused terrible harm. Others have been imprisoned unjustly. Many carry stories too complicated to fit comfortably into either innocence or guilt. But Van Gogh's painting also leaves something outside the frame. We see the prisoners. We do not see the people whose lives may have been altered by whatever brought some of them there. That absence matters. To recognise the humanity of a prisoner is not to diminish the humanity of a victim. Some crimes continue long after the act itself: in injury, grief, fear, absence, and families permanently rearranged by what happened. Any serious conversation about rehabilitation has to hold both lives in view—the person who may be capable of change and the person who must live with what cannot be undone. Van Gogh gives us no information about guilt or innocence. He does something more limited, and perhaps more useful. He asks us to look at the human beings before us without pretending that looking is the same as acquitting them. Justice cannot simply ask whether the jailbird still sings. It must also remember those who were silenced. A civilisation reveals something about itself in what it believes punishment is for. Revenge? Protection? Deterrence? Rehabilitation? Repentance? Restoration? These aims are not interchangeable, and societies have rarely agreed on where one should end and another begin. If a human being commits the worst act of his life at twenty, must that act become the complete definition of him at forty, sixty or eighty? There can be no serious society without consequences. But a society that believes people are nothing more than the worst thing they have ever done leaves little room for the possibility of change. Christianity offers one of its most striking examinations of this tension at the Crucifixion. Beside Christ is a condemned criminal: not a king, priest or philosopher, but a man being punished by the state. The significance of the scene is not that guilt ceases to matter. The condemned man is not removed from the cross, nor is his past rewritten. Instead, the narrative places punishment and mercy beside one another. Accountability remains, while the possibility that a human being may be more than his final judgement is preserved. That tension extends far beyond theology. We know how to punish. We are less certain what to do when the punished person changes. A prison gate can eventually open. Society's gate often remains locked. A sentence may last ten years; the label can last a lifetime. The former prisoner walks free yet discovers that employment, housing, relationships and trust can remain behind invisible bars. And there is another cruelty in imprisonment that cannot be measured by the dimensions of a cell. Time does not stop outside. Children learn to speak without you. Parents grow old. Friends move house. Familiar shops disappear. Neighbours die. Photographs arrive containing faces that have changed almost beyond recognition. Somewhere, a child blows out ten candles, then fifteen, then twenty, while the person who once carried them is learning the passing of years through visits and envelopes. The world does not wait for a sentence to end. It rearranges itself in the prisoner's absence. This may be one of incarceration's quietest punishments: not simply that you are removed from life, but that life learns how to continue without you. Van Gogh's circular procession makes this cruelty visible in another way. These men are moving, but they are not travelling. Each step takes them forward only to return them to where they began. Movement, which ordinarily suggests progress, has been transformed into repetition. One can imagine how differently time must feel inside such a circle. Outside, birthdays accumulate, buildings disappear, fashions change, governments fall and children become adults. Inside, the same wall passes before the eye again and again. What exactly do we mean, then, when we say someone has paid their debt to society if we never allow the debt to be considered paid? If there is no conceivable road back to human fellowship, punishment quietly becomes permanent exile. Van Gogh himself could not have known, while painting those walls, how far his own work would eventually travel beyond Saint-Rémy. He painted Prisoners' Round in the final year of his life, while his own world had narrowed considerably. But literal imprisonment is only one form of confinement. Most of us will never hear a cell door close behind us or count the years of a sentence. We will never walk Van Gogh's circular yard. Yet we understand something of what it means to feel trapped. There are people who have never committed a crime and have spent decades imprisoned by something no judge imposed upon them: a childhood they cannot forgive, a humiliation they cannot forget, a relationship that ended years ago, a mistake replayed every night, the opinion of a parent who is no longer alive, the fear of becoming poor, old or ordinary. Some prisons are built by other people. Some are built by circumstances. Others we construct ourselves. This is why freedom is more complicated than geography. A person can travel the world and remain trapped inside the same fear. Another can possess very little and experience an extraordinary interior freedom. Who, then, is free? Freedom may have less to do with how many doors are open to us than with whether we are capable of walking through them. A person may have money, mobility and choice, yet remain governed by the same resentment, insecurity or need for approval wherever they go. The surroundings change. The internal circuit does not. Sometimes abundance merely gives our prisons better furniture. Here again Van Gogh's circle becomes useful. His prisoners are physically compelled to repeat their route. Our own repetitions can be harder to recognise precisely because no guard commands them. We return voluntarily to the resentment, comparison, fear or ambition that exhausts us, then wonder why changing the scenery has not changed the journey. There are cages without locks because nothing physically prevents us from leaving them. We simply continue walking the same circle. And because these prisons have no guards, we may spend years waiting for someone else to release us. No one comes. There are freedoms that can be taken from us and others we surrender voluntarily: the freedom to forgive, to begin again, to stop performing, to admit that we were wrong, or to leave what no longer deserves to imprison us. Sometimes the most difficult door to open has never been locked. Van Gogh knew something of confinement. By the time he painted Prisoners' Round, he was living within the institutional routines of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole. The prison scene itself was adapted from an 1872 composition by the French illustrator, printmaker and painter Gustave Doré (1832–1883), associated with the Romantic tradition. Doré's image appeared as an engraving in London: A Pilgrimage (1872), depicting prisoners exercising at Newgate Prison. Van Gogh knew the composition through a print, but transformed Doré's monochrome vision through colour, brushwork and the particular sensibility of his own circumstances. It would be tempting to identify Van Gogh with the prisoner who looks outward. The resemblance has encouraged such readings, but certainty would turn suggestion into biography. We cannot know precisely what Van Gogh intended that face to mean. What we can say is more interesting: a man living within institutional walls chose to paint other men surrounded by walls. The painting is dominated by repetition. Brick follows brick. Prisoner follows prisoner. Step follows step. Yet the surface itself is anything but mechanically repetitive. Van Gogh's brushwork makes the walls restless. The masonry seems to shift and breathe. The architecture meant to represent permanence becomes unstable under the movement of paint. The subject is confinement, but the act of painting refuses stillness. And then there is that face. The prisoner does not escape the circle. Van Gogh offers no sentimental rescue. The gates do not swing open. No shaft of divine light descends into the yard. The man simply looks elsewhere while continuing to walk where he has been told to walk. That restraint matters. Freedom does not always arrive dramatically. Sometimes its first evidence is simply the existence of an interior life that circumstances have failed to extinguish. Which brings us back to the song. Maybe the jailbird does not sing because he believes the cage is beautiful. He sings because the cage is not the whole world. Somewhere beyond the wall there may be trees he remembers, a kitchen, a mother's voice, rain against a childhood window, someone waiting, someone who may have stopped waiting, a life before the mistake or a life after the sentence. Or he may sing for no reason that grand. Maybe he simply sings because he is still alive. There is dignity in that small refusal to disappear. Not triumph, innocence or absolution. Presence. I am still here. The world may name a person by what he did. An institution may number him. A sentence may reduce his physical horizon. None of these things constitutes complete knowledge of a human being. We meet people in individual chapters and assume we have read the book. We encounter the addict during the addiction, the prisoner during the sentence, the homeless man during the homelessness, the grieving woman during the grief, the failed businessman during the collapse. Then we mistake the moment for the person. Human beings do not remain still. They deteriorate and recover, fail again, contradict themselves, surprise themselves and occasionally become different from everything their past appeared to predict. If no one can become more than what they have been, rehabilitation has little meaning. So do repentance and forgiveness. Each depends upon the possibility that a human being is larger than the evidence of a particular moment. Mercy may begin there: not by pretending the cage does not exist or denying why it was built, but by recognising that something human remains inside it. The greater question is whether we are still capable of seeing it. Return, for a moment, to Van Gogh's prison yard. The men are still walking around and around beneath walls that seem almost high enough to erase the sky. Nothing in the painting tells us when the gates will open. Nothing tells us whether these men will be forgiven. Nothing tells us whether they deserve to be. Van Gogh gives us no verdict. He gives us a circle. And within that circle, a face. One man looks outward. That may be enough. Every prison depends, in some way, upon the belief that the walls are the limits of the world. They are not. Beyond them, life continues. Morning arrives somewhere. Trees move in the wind. Children grow older. Someone sets another place at a table. Someone remembers a name. Someone waits. The prisoner cannot see all of this, but he can remember that it exists. So can we. There will be periods in almost every life when the horizon narrows: a door closes, a diagnosis arrives, money disappears, a relationship ends, a reputation collapses, age changes what once seemed permanent, grief enters without asking permission. Then comes the temptation to believe that the circle is everything—that today will become tomorrow, that the mistake is the identity, that the loss is the future, that the wall is the horizon. Van Gogh's prisoner looks up. That tiny gesture may be the most important thing in the painting. Not escape. Not victory. Simply the refusal to believe that what surrounds you is all that exists. Freedom sometimes begins that quietly: by looking up, remembering, creating, praying, forgiving, or simply believing that the story is not finished. There are parts of a human being that no wall has ever learned how to contain. A memory can cross it. A prayer can cross it. A painting can cross it. A song can cross it. More than a century after Van Gogh painted those prisoners walking their endless circle, the men are still there. The walls are still there. The gate is still closed. But the painting escaped. And perhaps that is why, when everything else has been taken away, the jailbird still sings.
