Commodus: The Tragedy of the Unseen Son

By Theresa Rézeau A lion’s skin rests over the emperor’s head. In one hand he holds the club of Hercules. In the other are the apples of the Hesperides, won by the hero during one of his legendary labours. His hair and beard are meticulously carved, his face youthful and composed. Beneath him, an elaborate arrangement of Amazons, a globe, a cornucopia and other symbols extends the transformation beyond costume into something closer to apotheosis. This is Commodus (161–192 CE), emperor of Rome, presented not simply as a ruler but in the guise of Hercules. The marble Bust of Commodus as Hercules, created during his reign and now in the Capitoline Museums in Rome, is one of the most extraordinary surviving images of Roman imperial self-representation. Its elaborate symbolism associates the emperor with Hercules and with the language of divine and heroic power. The sculpture confronts us with a question that authority alone cannot answer: why does the most powerful man in Rome need to become someone else? Nearly two thousand years later, Ridley Scott’s 2000 film Gladiator offered its own answer. Not a historical answer, but a psychological one. Played by Joaquin Phoenix, Commodus is jealous, volatile and desperate for admiration. His cruelty is unmistakable, yet the film does something more interesting than simply present him as a monster. It imagines the child still alive inside the emperor. One of its most revealing scenes takes place not in the Colosseum but in a military tent. Marcus Aurelius has told Commodus that he will not inherit imperial power. Instead, in the film’s fictional narrative, Maximus will hold authority until Rome can be returned to republican government. Commodus responds by recalling a letter in which his father listed four virtues: wisdom, justice, fortitude and temperance. He knows he does not possess them. But he insists that he has virtues of his own, including ambition, resourcefulness, courage and devotion. Then the argument about succession becomes something far more intimate. “But none of my virtues were on your list.” It is a devastating line because the fictional Commodus is no longer arguing about Rome. He is asking whether his father has ever recognised anything valuable in him. He goes on to describe how desperately he has searched for ways to make Marcus proud and how much even a single wholehearted gesture of affection would have meant to him. The future emperor suddenly appears less concerned with inheriting the world than with receiving something almost every child understands: recognition from a parent. The scene is powerful precisely because it is fiction. The historical record does not establish that Commodus spent his childhood emotionally starved by Marcus Aurelius, and we should not use a screenplay as evidence that he did. The real Marcus did not choose a Maximus over his son. Commodus was elevated to the rank of Caesar as a child and became co-emperor with his father in 177 CE. When Marcus died in 180 CE, Commodus succeeded him. Gladiator gives us the unseen son; history gives us something different, an emperor who would eventually make himself extraordinarily visible. If we return to the marble, we do not need to diagnose the man standing inside it. We can examine what he chose to show. Commodus does not appear in ordinary imperial dress. The Nemean lion’s skin belongs to Hercules, as do the club and the apples of the Hesperides. The sculpture does not merely suggest admiration for the hero. It deliberately merges the identities of emperor and demigod. This was not an isolated association. During the later part of his reign, Commodus increasingly identified himself with Hercules. Ancient accounts also record his fascination with arena combat and public displays of physical prowess. The emperor entered a realm traditionally occupied by professional performers and gladiators, turning political authority into spectacle. There is a temptation to look backwards from that behaviour and allow Gladiator to explain it for us: the unloved son becomes the emperor demanding applause. The interpretation is psychologically satisfying, but history cannot prove it. Something more interesting emerges when the fictional character and historical object are held beside one another without pretending they are the same kind of evidence. Cinema gives us an imagined wound. Marble gives us a documented performance of identity. Between them lies a question larger than Commodus himself: what happens when the desire to be recognised meets the power to control how others must see you? Most people spend their lives negotiating recognition through relationships. We want to be respected by colleagues, understood by partners, valued by friends and seen by parents. We cannot command these things into existence. Another person remains free to misunderstand us, overlook us or withhold what we want from them. An emperor occupies a different position because power can manufacture the conditions of recognition. Titles can be expanded, images commissioned, ceremonies staged and crowds assembled. Statues can place the ruler beside gods and heroes. What cannot be secured privately can at least appear obtainable publicly. The Bust of Commodus as Hercules makes that possibility visible without telling us what Commodus privately felt. Look at the lion skin. Hercules does not stand beside the emperor as a source of comparison. Commodus wears him. A ruler could commission images associating himself with courage, military victory, wisdom or divine favour. Here the identification becomes more complete. The body of the emperor enters the visual identity of the hero, raising a more difficult question about the difference between possessing authority and possessing an identity secure enough not to require constant confirmation. This is where Gladiator becomes useful again. The film’s Commodus believes that his father possesses a definition of virtue into which he does not fit. Wisdom, justice, fortitude and temperance belong to Marcus’s moral architecture. Commodus offers ambition, resourcefulness, courage and devotion instead. His anguish comes not simply from failing the test but from believing that the test has made him invisible. The scene touches something painfully ordinary beneath its imperial setting. Parents often carry ideas about what a successful child should become. Children arrive with temperaments, ambitions and abilities that do not always resemble those expectations. The distance between those visions can produce conflict even where love exists. Most children eventually have to decide whether to continue seeking the approval they imagined or to build an identity capable of surviving without it. The fictional Commodus cannot make that separation, and his desire to be loved gradually becomes inseparable from his desire to be obeyed. Recognition ceases to be something freely given and becomes something power might compel. History cannot tell us that this transformation occurred inside the real Commodus. It does, however, give us an emperor whose public image became increasingly theatrical. The real Commodus inherited an empire from one of Rome’s most celebrated rulers. Marcus Aurelius (121–180 CE) is remembered as both emperor and Stoic philosopher, largely through the writings now known as the Meditations. His reputation for philosophical seriousness has survived for nearly two millennia. To inherit from such a father meant inheriting more than territory; it also meant inheriting comparison. Every successor lives beneath the reputation of whoever came before, but dynastic succession makes the comparison intimate. The predecessor is not merely another ruler. He is your father. The marble offers one response to the problem of inherited identity. Commodus does not attempt to become another Marcus Aurelius. He reaches instead for a radically different model of authority. The father had philosophy. The son chose Hercules. Hercules represented strength proved through action. His identity was established through extraordinary labours, physical endurance and victory over monsters. For an emperor fascinated by arena performance, the hero provided a visual vocabulary far removed from the philosophical image associated with Marcus Aurelius. Imperial imagery tells us something important about how rulers wish to be understood. Portraiture does not merely preserve a face; it can construct authority. The Commodus before us is therefore both man and message. His carefully carved features remain recognisable beneath the lion skin. The sculptor has not erased the emperor in order to create Hercules. Instead, the two identities have been fused, asking the viewer to recognise Commodus and Hercules simultaneously. That fusion returns us to the question at the centre of Gladiator: what happens when being yourself does not feel sufficient? The film answers through tragedy. Its Commodus longs for his father’s approval, loses the succession to the man who embodies Marcus’s preferred virtues and turns the resulting humiliation into violence. The historical narrative is different, but the sculpture preserves something the fictional story helps us notice: the enormous human investment involved in being recognised as a particular kind of person. Recognition becomes especially dangerous when it is confused with obedience. A crowd can cheer because it admires, but it can also cheer because political power has constructed the spectacle and determined the expected response. Those two sounds may be indistinguishable to the person standing at the centre. Commodus’s association with the arena makes that ambiguity particularly striking. The emperor already possessed political supremacy. Entering the spectacle offered another kind of confirmation through visibility, performance and the immediate reaction of an audience. The man who ruled Rome also wanted Rome to watch, though history cannot tell us from this alone what emotional need, if any, lay behind those performances. The marble tells us only what kind of image was being projected. Commodus was not content to appear merely imperial. He appeared heroic, superhuman and close to divine. Here the fictional son and historical emperor can finally meet without being confused. Gladiator asks us to imagine what it feels like not to be seen by one person whose recognition matters. The bust asks us to confront what it looks like when one person possesses enough power to make an entire society see him as he wishes. Between those conditions lies a warning about recognition itself. The desire to be seen is not inherently dangerous. It is one of the most ordinary human needs. Children look towards parents for it, while adults continue searching for it through love, friendship, professional achievement, reputation and applause. The danger begins when recognition can no longer be freely withheld, because at that point admiration and power become difficult to separate. This is why the Bust of Commodus as Hercules remains so compelling. We know what the symbols mean. The lion skin belongs to Hercules. The club announces strength. The apples recall heroic achievement. The elaborate base contributes to an image of imperial elevation. The visual message is anything but modest. Yet for all its symbolism, the marble reaches a limit. It can tell us how Commodus wished to appear, but it cannot tell us what he felt when no one was looking. That silence is where history and cinema part company. Gladiator fills it with an unseen son who wants his father to recognise virtues that were never placed on the list. History leaves the interior life largely inaccessible. The lion skin rests above his head. Hercules’ club is in his hand. The emperor of Rome has transformed himself into a hero. The marble tells us that Commodus wanted to be seen. It cannot tell us why.
